The 8” x 6” Project Exhibition

The 8” by 6” Project II

written by Ivan Gabriel:

The 8’’ by 6’’ Project II is a showcase by a diverse group of creative individuals, from various different artistic style and background who are associated within the art community of Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

Each creative individual was given a piece of wood block measuring 8 inches by 6 inches, and was asked to incorporate it into their respective works somehow. The wood piece (8 inches x 6 inches) came from abandoned logs. These logs were from the trees that were uprooted in a thunderstorm that hit Penang in November 2017. The thunderstorm caused massive floods all around Penang, destruction of homes, as well as landslides that caused deaths.

The 8’’ by 6’’ Project has always been a celebration of creativity and imagination, as each creative was given the exact same wood piece, but how one chooses to incorporate it into the exhibit, is entirely up to the creative individual. This particular edition is extra special as it also highlights that destruction could signify new life, a rebirth. Those uprooted trees went through many different stages of rebirth. From an uprooted tree, to a few chainsawed logs. From a log, to irregularly chopped pieces of wood. From a piece of wood to an idea. And, that idea becomes ART.

The trees have now breathe a new life, symbolizing a new beginning…
